Talent Unlimited High School – Audition Descriptions

On our audition day, you must arrive on time and be prepared, as outlined in the audition guidelines below.  You may audition for more than one studio on a given day, time permitting.  When there is a conflict, you may audition on a date other than your borough date.

DANCE

The dance audition consists of participation in ballet warm ups and a modern dance combination.  Each student’s potential to succeed in the dance program will be evaluated based on alignment, the ability to follow directions, musicality, strength, and stretch.  Applicants are expected to bring dance clothes (leotards, footless tights, and ballet shoes), a pen and a pencil.

DRAMA

Students must come prepared to present two-memorized monologues (1 minute each) taken from recognized plays.  Characters chosen should be age appropriate.  Applicants may also be asked to do an improvisation and a reading of material provided at the audition.  Please bring a pen and a pencil.

INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC

Applicants should be prepared to demonstrate competence and agility on their instrument by playing a prepared selection of their choice.  They should bring their instruments to the audition (percussion, baritone sax, guitar amplifier, baritone horn and tuba will be provided) and the music needed to perform.  In addition, sight reading ability will be tested and students will be asked to play two scales from memory.

VOCAL MUSIC

Students must come prepared to sing one song, in the correct key, and must bring the sheet music for that song.  Applicants will also be asked to repeat vocal phrases demonstrated by the teacher in order to test rhythm, tonal memory, and basic vocal technique.

MUSICAL THEATRE

Students must come prepared to perform a memorized and rehearsed song and monologue from the Broadway repertoire (bring the sheet music for the song and an accompanist will be provided).  Applicants will also be asked to demonstrate their dance skills by learning a combination.
